Neither Snow nor Rain...

Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds - is inscribed on the main U.S. Post Office Building in NYC. My recent experiences tells me that it doesn't take much to slow down the mail these days. But, it looks like FedEx has no issues delivering in the snow! We got another 18" of snow overnight... and the snow is expected to continue on and off thru tomorrow morning.

Red Trees

I don't know if these are considered to be tiny trees or giant shrubs. But their reddish color caught my attention at the southwestern corner of Stuyvesant Town.

Beekman Rising

My first look at the downtown skyline, from this Lower East Side vantage point, since Beekman Tower was topped off. The tower, which will be the tallest residential building in Manhattan, has become a dominant feature on the skyline.

Municipal Building

Looking out thru one of the arches of the Municipal Building across from City Hall. That's Beekman Tower under construction in the background.

Gramercy Roofscape

Water tank and TV antennas (what? no cable?) on a rooftop in the Gramercy/Flatiron area. Note the painted billboard with "MHT" in the black arrow. It points down to where a branch of the Manufacturers Hanover Trust Co. bank once stood. Back in the early 90's MHT merged with Chemical Bank, which later merged with Chase Manhattan Bank, which merged with J.P. Morgan, which merged with Bank One, which last year merged with Washington Mutual.... who's next?

Another Midnight FDNY Visit

Another midnight response by FDNY on my block. The trucks are not their usual clean, shiny red. They're covered in slush from the dirty snow that's been lingering on the streets for over a week. I don't know if this was a gas leak like the last time. There was no sign of fire or smoke and nothing reported on the local message boards.

Digging in the Snow

The snow keeps on coming. But, that doesn't stop this crew from digging up the street to make repairs to the infrastructure beneath.

Waiting for the Blizzard

Another snowfall and another look out my window, with about 2" on the ground. There's a blizzard warning in effect and the snow is expected to fall, with increasing intensity, for another 16 hours!

Tribeca Alley

Whenever I see a bridge like this connecting two old buildings, I wonder about the history of the buildings... why was the bridge needed? who (and why) walked across the bridge? is it still used today?

Union Square Skyline

Looking north over Union Square park. The 3 towers in the distance are (l to r) Empire State Building, One Madison Park (back side), and the old MetLife clock tower. The ESB is about 1/2 mile farther from the camera than the other two (which are across the street from each other.)
