Grand Central Station Revisited

I went to the Apple Genius Bar at their Grand Central store on Saturday and wanted to take a photo of the main concourse to test my new 16mm f/2.8 prime lens + wide angle adapter. But I grabbed the wrong lens as I ran out the door so I needed to use my kit zoom lens (16-50mm) at 16mm instead. I wasn't happy with the results so I went back yesterday with the right lens + adapter and I'm much happier with this shot.

A peek at the beautiful Neo-Gothic Woolworth Building between two of its neighbors in the City Hall area, Manhattan.

New York Life Building

The golden roof top of the New York Life Building lit up at night. The Neo-Gothic building on Madison Ave was designed by Cass Gilbert (same architect who designed the Woolworth Building) in the late 1920s as the home of the New York Life Insurance Company.

FiDi Skyline

The Downtown Manhattan / Financial District skyline seen from the Lower East Side. Some buildings of note... left to right in the background: The green-topped building is (I'm almost sure) 40 Wall Street, AKA The Trump Building. The rectangular slab building to its right is One Chase Manhattan Plaza followed by the Verizon building (large whie building), New York by Gehry (aka 8 Spruce Street) with Four World Trade Center right behind it, still under construction. The building towards the right with the green roof is the Woolworth Building and, of course, the tallest building is One World Trade Center, still awaiting the arrival/installation of it's spire to top it off.

Colgate Clock

This clock is all that remains of the old Colgate-Palmolive headquarters (the toothpaste people)  which stood on the Jersey City waterfront across the Hudson River from downtown Manhattan. The clock lived on top of the building and faced the river and Manhattan. Colgate moved its headquarters elsewhere in the mid-1980s and Goldman Sachs built a large office tower in its place in the early 2000s. The clock was preserved and reinstalled at ground level just south of the Goldman Sachs Tower. This is at Exchange Place, Jersey City, New Jersey

Civic Center Skyline

Civic Center buildings framed by Frank Gehry's 76-story apartment tower (left) and the seemingly windowless Verizon building (right). There are some windows in those black recessed strips running up and down the sides of the Verizon Building. The Gehry tower (8 Spruce Street, aka Beekman Tower) is now renting and is the tallest residential building in Manhattan - in fact, tallest in the western hemisphere.

African Burial Ground - National Monument

During construction of a new federal office building in the early 1990s, remains of over 400 African Americans were discovered, dating back to the 1600s-1700s. The remains were eventually reinterred at this site, close to where they were originally found. This is at Duane Street near Broadway, near City Hall

The Stonewall Inn

The Stonewall Inn on Christopher Street in Greenwich Village, all decked out for yesterday's annual Pride Parade. Stonewall is considered by many to be the birthplace of the gay rights movement in the USA. This year the parade took on special meaning with Friday's passage of a law legalizing same-sex marriage in New York.

Empire State Building

Always so much architectural details to see and marvel at when I stop to look- really look - at the Empire State Building.

The Met

The Metropolitan Opera House at Lincoln Center. The fronts of the steps, in the foreground, electronically display current and upcoming events, etc. I used HDR processing to be able to see thru the windows of The Met despite the bright daylight outside. Normally, I would not do this with so many people in the scene (moving people and multiple exposures don't really mix well because their positions change from exposure to exposure). But, I figured I'd get away with it in this case given how insignificant the people look against the larger subject behind them. There are a few "trouble" spots around some of the people. But, overall, I think it's an acceptable compromise in this case.

I climbed up on one of the rock hills in Central Park this weekend and saw this view looking out over the southwest corner of the park.
