Ed Koch Queensboro Bridge

The bridge made famous by Simon & Garfunkel's "59th Street Bridge Song" has recently been renamed the Ed Koch Queensboro Bridge. The new name honors former Mayor Ed Koch, who is credited for rehabilitating NYC's crumbling infrastructure (including this bridge) after taking office.

Track Walking

Was on a moving 7 Train trying to snap the double-decker rail cars (LIRR?) we were passing over. Instead, I caught some workers walking along the west-bound tracks.

Silvercup

Taken from a moving #7 train on the elevated tracks near Queensboro Plaza. Silvercup used to be a bakery. Today it's a film/TV studio (largest in New York). The Silvercup sign remains pretty much as it was in the bakery days. The bottom was changed to say "Studios." The roadways in the foreground are access ramps leading to/from the 59th Street Bridge (left background).

Big Dig

Taken from a moving "N" train... construction site just north of Queensboro Plaza... deep excavation with lots of existing pipes at different depths left intact.

Tracks

Courthouse Square elevated subway station on the 7 line in Long Island City. I'm glad I don't live in that apartment building just beyond the station. It must be quite noisy. But, OTOH, if cable TV service were to go out, I could just bring a lawn chair up to the roof and watch the giant Fresh Direct electronic billboard a few blocks away:-)

2-For-1. A different view of Manhattan from the Queens side of the river, thru a structure (crane?) from a bygone era. Then, looking back at Queens from further out on the pier. Queens Landing in Long Island City, Queens, NYC
Camera: Panasonic DMC-TZ3

P.S. the cranes are called Gantries (used to lift rail cars off barges) and the park built around these gantries is named "Gantry Park."
