Snow, Snow, Snow

Still Digging Out

The sunrise is deceptively calming. The city is still digging out after the powerful blizzard.

Blizzard Dig-Out

The Blizzard of Dec 26-27, 2010. It was a really intense storm that went on for over 18 hours and even included thundersnow (snow + thunder + lightning) for a while. It left just over 20 inches of snow that's been pushed around by snow plows and blown around by Mother Nature. It will take a while to dig out of this mess.

Post-Christmas Blizzard

3 or 1: First: at the height of the blizzard. The little plow trying to clear the sidewalk across the street is just no match for the snow. The bigger street plows aren't having much success keeping the streets clear, either. Second: taken during a brief lull in the snow and wind, about an hour later. Third: plow-equipped tractor trying to clear the sidewalk of snow

Top Floor Basement

I couldn't resist when I saw "basement" lit up at the top of the building. This wall of windows lights up the south end of Union Square.

Schaefer Landing - Williamsburg Bridge

Yesterday's photo was taken about a month ago, from ground level at the river's edge. By coincidence, I was photographing a 10th floor apartment late yesterday afternoon and caught this view of the Williamsburg Bridge and Schaefer Landing.

Schaefer Landing

The two apartment buildings at the left are Schaefer Landing, built on the site of the Schaefer Brewing Company, in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. This was taken from East River Park (Lower East Side) on the Manhattan side of the river.

Stuy Town View Revisited

I posted a photo of a similar view back in January of this year. I was back here this weekend celebrating Thanksgiving. This time the weather was not as gloomy, and the lighting was better. I also added some HDR processing this time, using multiple exposures. Taken through a friend's window in Stuyvesant Town, looking south towards the part of the East Village known as Alphabet City.

Squirrel in a Tree

I'm not sure what this little guy is doing but he looks comfortable despite the cold and wind. This is outside my window.

Holiday Lights

Seasonal lighting is starting to appear around the city. This is a park at the East River co-op on Grand Street, Lower East Side.

Sheep Meadow

The ginormous Sheep Meadow at Central Park. There used to be sheep grazing here until Robert Moses (NYC Parks Commissioner) shipped them off to Brooklyn in the 1930s. Now, it's mostly people grazing here. First photo is looking east. Second photo is looking north.

MLK Jr. Community Garden Revisited

I posted a photo of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Garden at the Henry Street Settlement back in March. I stopped by again a few days ago and found the garden wearing its fall colors!

Corlears Hook Park

I'm convinced the trees in the Lower East Side are defective. Most don't bother turning colors before dropping their leaves on the ground. Or, at best, they turn brown and call it a season. But, I managed to find a few trees at Corlears Hook Park (Cherry Street & Jackson Street) that are putting on more of a show than the rest.

The new Trump SoHo on Spring Street, viewed here from the West Village. At over 40 floors high, it seems totally out of scale to its neighbors.

It's been about 2 years since my last look at the Forward Building from across Seward Park. It's an old familiar face which I always enjoy looking at.

Outside Remedy Diner on E. Houston Street... killing time, waiting for the bus. There was actually still some daylight at the time. I used 3 different exposures and HDR tone mapping to come up with this night effect.

Fall Colors

Still no sign of fall in the city - except in this beautiful store window display on E. 12th Street near University Place. I don't even know what type of business this is. I was in too much of a rush to stop and investigate. The lettering on the window says "Windows in Progress."
