Chinatown Grocery

Through the tinted window of a taxi - passing through Chinatown/Lower East Side on my way home.

Cleaning Up

If my arithmetic is correct, we've had snow on the ground for about 55 consecutive days in NYC, since Dec 26. It's almost all gone as of yesterday. Luckily, the Dept. of Sanitation (DSNY) has been able to switch back from snow clearance to trash pickup. This is outside the old Seward Park High School building on Essex Street between Grand & Broome - taken from a passing bus.

New York's Bravest

FDNY responded to an automobile accident where the car ended up on the sidewalk, knocking over a traffic light. I felt sorry for the guys in the heavy rubber suits standing out under the hot sun. The temperature was close to 100 degrees.

Waterfall

Something different at my fave billboard (23rd St. & Park Ave). Once again, I caught the painters in the act of changing the billboard. This time they painted windows onto the facade with the added touch of what appears to be torrents of water pouring out of the painted-on windows.

Track Walking

Was on a moving 7 Train trying to snap the double-decker rail cars (LIRR?) we were passing over. Instead, I caught some workers walking along the west-bound tracks.

Neither Snow nor Rain...

Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds - is inscribed on the main U.S. Post Office Building in NYC. My recent experiences tells me that it doesn't take much to slow down the mail these days. But, it looks like FedEx has no issues delivering in the snow! We got another 18" of snow overnight... and the snow is expected to continue on and off thru tomorrow morning.

Another Midnight FDNY Visit

Another midnight response by FDNY on my block. The trucks are not their usual clean, shiny red. They're covered in slush from the dirty snow that's been lingering on the streets for over a week. I don't know if this was a gas leak like the last time. There was no sign of fire or smoke and nothing reported on the local message boards.

Digging in the Snow

The snow keeps on coming. But, that doesn't stop this crew from digging up the street to make repairs to the infrastructure beneath.

New York's Bravest

FDNY after putting out a fire that appears to have gutted most - if not all - of an apartment on Madison Street in the Vladeck Houses.

6 for 1: I had the opportunity to watch the painting of a new ad on my fave billboard at 23rd St & Park Ave South. Note the 2nd scaffold at the lower right corner in the first photo. The 5 smaller photos which follow show the progress of the guys painting that white area. As each painter needed to reach an area, he would move his end of the scaffold up or down. I couldn't tell if there is a template on the wall that they were following. If there isn't then these guys are a special breed of artist.
The first was taken with the Fuji F200EXR. I needed the longer zoom of the Canon SX100IS for the smaller ones.

Window Washers

Not a job I'd want to do... despite what must be great views from up there

The NYPD mounted cops were back on Grand Street today. I was able to get closer this time.

Two horses (NYPD mounted cops) parked on Grand Street. I wonder if they put money in the parking meters?
