This is about as close as I could get to capturing the view that Washington Roebling must have had from his house at 110 Columbia Heights (Brooklyn). He oversaw construction of the Brooklyn Bridge as Chief Engineer and monitored the progress from his window while confined to his house due to illness. He would have been about 4 floors higher than this vantage point and none of the buildings in today's photo would have been there in the late 1880s. I'm reading The Great Bridge, by David McCullough - about the construction of the bridge. It's an amazing story!
I'm told the land being cleared in the foreground will be part of a new waterfront park called Brooklyn Bridge Park.
