First Snow

Ssssssssteam Essssscaping

Steam escaping from a manhole cover at 1st Avenue & E 18th Street on the perimeter of Stuyvesant Town. FDNY and Con Edison crews are on the scene. There were a couple of similar events in the Gramercy Park/Stuyvesant Town area over the weekend.

Stuy Stacks

Smokestacks at the Con Ed steam plant on Avenue C & E. 14th Street, behind Stuyvesant Town. This is the plant where a huge explosion during the height of Hurricane Sandy shook the residents in neighboring Stuy Town apartment buildings.

Con Ed - Stuy Cove

Playing with some new filters - this time from OnOne Software. This a view of Manhattan from the Brooklyn side of the East River, looking towards the Con Edison steam plant just south of Stuyvesant Cove / Stuyvesant Town with the ever-beautiful Empire State Building thrown in for good measure;-)  This photo is from July.

Stuyvesant Cove

Small patch of moss-covered rock and sand extending out into the East River at Stuyvesant Cove around East 18th Street. The tall buildings on the other side of the river are in Williamsburg, Brooklyn

Stuyvesant Town

Some Photoshop fun - trying to make a dull photo look not so dull. The first image is straight from the camera. The 2nd is after processing with Adobe Camera Raw + Photoshop + Topaz. This is the south side of Stuyvesant Town on E 14th Street between 1st Ave and Ave A.

Stuyvesant Town Sky

Two from Stuyvesant Town around sundown last night under a busy sky - #1: an unusually empty First Avenue (for rush hour) and the seemingly endless buildings of Stuyvesant Town & Peter Cooper Village. #2: The moon peeking thru the clouds above one of the Stuy Town buildings. #1 is HDR (fusion) and #2 is HDR (tone mapping) + slight painterly effect

Stuyvesant Town Ups & Downs

Every building at Stuy Town has two entrances, at opposite sides of the builidng. One is at street level while the other is one floor higher, with the grounds on that side of the building built up higher. This makes for some interesting landscaping with stairs and ramps throughout the property to get you to the different levels.

Stuy Town View Revisited

I posted a photo of a similar view back in January of this year. I was back here this weekend celebrating Thanksgiving. This time the weather was not as gloomy, and the lighting was better. I also added some HDR processing this time, using multiple exposures. Taken through a friend's window in Stuyvesant Town, looking south towards the part of the East Village known as Alphabet City.

Sign Overload!

Too many signs out the car window at this intersection near Stuyvesant Cove.

Bike City

First Avenue is the latest to get NYC's new bike lane/bus lane/parking scheme intended to increase safety for cyclists and speed bus flow. The bicycle lane is at the curb on the west side of the avenue. The parking lane is next and separates bicyclists from moving traffic. The two lanes closest to the curb on the east side of the avenue are reserved for buses.

Smokestacks of the Consolidated Edison (ConEd) sub-station beyond the Stuyvesant Town trees at the eastern end of 14th Street.

StuyTown Feeder

I was wandering in Stuyvesant Town - NW quadrant, I think - and I came across this feeder.

Monster Tree

These trees which line much of the perimeter of Stuyvesant Town remind me of the evil monster trees in The Wizard of Oz.

Late Afternoon Sun...

...lighting the tops of "the round building" (well, that's what I call it) and Stuyvesant Town in the background. The round building is part of the Beth Israel Hospital complex.

Red Trees

I don't know if these are considered to be tiny trees or giant shrubs. But their reddish color caught my attention at the southwestern corner of Stuyvesant Town.
