I used to love driving out to JFK International Airport to watch the planes take off and land. Back in the days before hijackings and terrorist attacks there were even observation decks where visitors could get up close to the action. Today, about the closest you can get to a plane without actually flying somewhere is the AirTrain which loops around JFK's terminals.

Most NYC apartments have no outdoor space and all too often the outdoor space that exists is wasted as storage.

The trashy side of Stuyvesant Town. What do you do with trash from over 11,000 apartments on a holiday when there is no trash pickup? Dump it on the sidewalks!

3-for-1. The first photo below was taken yesterday while cat-sitting for a friend. The low-rise art deco building in the foreground is Amalgamated Dwellings, built around 1930. About 6 hours after this photo was taken, a fire gutted two apartments in the rear. Luckily, nobody was injured and the building suffered no major damage (other than the two gutted apartments). The 2nd photo shows boarded windows after the fire. The 3rd photo shows some of New York's Bravest investigating on the roof this afternoon.

I was on a bus heading across 14th Street, trying to snap a photo without trees getting in the way. I suddenly realized how many there were on that block. I spent the rest of the ride home looking down every cross street, and there were trees lining every single street. I guess I never consciously realized how many trees there are in Manhattan. This is 14h Street near 2nd Ave.
