Winter Skyline

I was photographing an apartment interior yesterday and saw this familiar view out the window. I have lots of pics of the same view - but, I think this is the first time with snow so prominent.

Across the River

Old Snow

3 for 1: Hopefully, the last of the snow pics (at least for 2009). The snow gets old and bothersome fast around here. All taken around the Co-op Village area of the Lower East Side at the east end of Grand Street. First: Lewis Street. Second: Madison Street. Third: Henry Street.

Arts Center

The Harry de Jur Playhouse (l) and Abrons Arts Center (r) at the Henry Street Settlement (on Grand Street). The playhouse, built around 1915, is a national landmark.

Snow

The park behind my apartment building the morning after the so-called "blizzard of 2009" - it was hardly a blizzard here in the city. But, we did get about 12 inches of snow overnight.

Clinton Street

Most of the north-south streets around here curve to align with the street grid of the rest of Manhattan - with another slight turn at Houston Street. This is Clinton Street between East Broadway and Grand Street. Clinton Street is named for George Clinton, general in the Revolutionary War, governor of New York from 1777-1798 and U.S. vice president from 1804-1812. George was DeWitt Clinton's uncle.

Sky, Clouds, & Trees

Outside my window yesterday. Ok, so I cropped out the tops of the buildings across the street. But, looking at this, you'd think I lived on a farm or somewhere in the suburbs.

Columbus Circle

Old Synagogue

I took a photo of this building at 80 Forsyth Street because the architectural details around the windows caught my attention. I didn't notice the subtle Stars of David on the fire escapes until now. A quick Google search revealed, much to my surprise, that this tiny building was once a synagogue - Beth Hamedrash Shaarei Torah.

East Side Skyline

Looking north at the eastern half of Manhattan from the Lower East Side. The bridge in the foreground is the Williamsburg Bridge (J train on its way to Brooklyn). The bridge in the background is the 59th Street (Queensboro) bridge. The buildings in the foreground are Baruch Houses - the largest NYCHA housing complex in Manhattan (one of the many low-income housing complexes built by Robert Moses).

I was walking along E. 23rd Street and saw the flag waving above, illuminated by lights on the building (which I believe is Baruch College, part of the University of the City of New York). I'm still amazed at how well this camera handles night shots without a tripod. It's not perfect, but, it's not as bad as I expected it would be.

Vertical Parking Lot

Another one of the parking lots that maximize space by using lifts to stack cars vertically.

Delancey Street Graffiti

Graffiti on a Lower East Side building. I was puzzled, at first, as to how the "artist" was able to create his art so high off the ground. Then, I realized that there used to be another building that stood adjacent to this one. The artist probably stood on the roof of that building to paint this.

Graffiti Magnets

The City Council just voted to ban solid, roll-down gates (like on these Avenue A storefronts). One of the reasons cited for the ban is the graffiti that tends to show up on these gates almost as soon as they're installed.
